With heavy hearts and the deepest sorrows, we mourn the passing of Ayatollah Dr. Sayyid Fadhel Hosseini Al-Milani, who passed away Monday morning in London, United Kingdom, on September 2nd, 2024.  

Ayatollah Sayyid Fadhel Hosseini Al-Milani, a distinguished scholar and jurist, was born in the Holy City of Karbala in 1944 into a prominent religious family. He was the grandson of the late Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Muhamad Hadi Al-Milani and the late Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Sadiq Qazwini.   

The respected late Scholar, Ayatollah Sayyid Al-Milani, studied at the Islamic Seminary of the Holy City of Najaf from 1962 to 1970 under the late Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Abul Qasim Al-Khoei and the late Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Mohsin Al-Hakim the foremost jurists of their time. He then completed his studies under the guidance of the late Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Hadi Al-Milani in Mashhad.    

Ayatollah Sayyid Al-Milani was acknowledged as a Mujtahid in 1974 and dedicated over 50 years to teaching Islamic studies specifically Jurisprudence, Principles of Jurisprudence, and Theology. During his lifetime, he authored seven books in the Arabic Language, seven in the English language and one in Persian. His prominent work on Ijtihad, ‘Lectures on Imamiyah Jurisprudence’, was published in six volumes and continues to be used in the Hawza seminaries of Mashhad and Qom.   

Ayatollah Sayyid Al-Milani was awarded his Phd from the university of Oxford in Philosophy. He was appointed as the UK representative of the late Ayatollah Sayyid Abul Qasim Al-Khoei, and was accredited on behalf of Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Sistani, serving as the Imam at Imam Khoei Islamic Centre. Additionally, he was the Dean of International Colleges for Islamic Studies, London and the Islamic studies PhD candidate supervisor.  

His many contributions to Islamic jurisprudence and Theology as well as the development of the Shia Muslim community will remain as an ever-lasting legacy, inspiring and educating many generations to come.   

We express our deepest condolences to the Family of the late Ayatollah Sayyid Fadhil Al-Milani and request you recite Surah Al-Fatiha for his soul. May Allah (swt) grant him the highest ranks in Jannah and bless him with the intercession of Ahlulbayt (as).
